03-16-06 - SST maintains current head rule for the Modifieds

After a long awaited decision, the cast iron head rule for the 2006 SST Modified Racing Series remains as printed, currently excluding the Dart Platinum Series product. An SST Tech investigation was stimulated by the development of the new design in which many teams and engine builders believed would add 20-30 horsepower by bolting on the new Dart Product, according to advertisement and testing. Although the major interest of SST was not necessarily the proposed added horsepower, but the ability to standardize equipment and the practicality of having only one style head to tech. This process would eliminate the variety of manufactured dimensions used in the production of cast iron heads, and the ability to modify them at the expense of the team.

The additional information proposed to Dart by SST Officials, was to create a Marketing Program to benefit the SST organization as well as the teams that support them. An advertising program with contingency vouchers added to the tour pay-off would help offset some of the cost for 200 teams required to purchase the new Dart Products. This program would have been enacted for two years leading up to the single head rule. This would have allowed teams to use up older equipment and generate additional Dart credit prior to purchasing. Teams which opted to bolt on the Platinum Series product immediately would have been subject to a weight disadvantage until the two year grace period expired.

Although the program was not accepted for the 2006 season, representatives of Dart wish to keep communications open with SST and continue the development of the Marketing Package for future seasons. Current arrangements to do a bolt-on Dyno-Test are underway for the early spring to help with the technical decision making of the Platinum Series product.

The fear of simply allowing this innovative head design into the SST Series with out proper financial sponsorship, can be easier explained by “The Pink Wheel Theory”. If Joe Racer wins with pink wheels…everyone is going to want or need pink wheels to win next week…this will elevate the cost to the individual SST Team, and possibly discourage budgeted teams who find themselves slightly off the pace, feeling their product maybe insufficient. Not all teams will be able to afford the latest equipment as it first becomes available in the marketplace, therefore careful consideration needs to be taken to maintain the integrity of the SST Series, and the foundation of which it was designed.
